Next Saturday (October 13th) is GeekFest at the Ketchikan Public Library, from 11:00am-4:00pm. We have a universe of fun lined up for all ages.
What is GeekFest? It’s a Library event celebrating the geek-culture found in literature and its offshoots, including comics, graphic novels, movies, games, and other new literary forms. GeekFest’s mission is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and interests among participants, as well as the creation of new creative relationships between members in our community.
Who should come to GeekFest? Everyone!
Photo-Ops & Displays (All-Day): We’ll have a full-sized Doctor Who Tardis and some stand-ups, so get your picture taken with Doctor number Ten. DC’s larger-than-life League of Justice will leave you feeling like the mere mortal you are. Plus, collectibles will be on display, our geeky books will be out for checkout, and the Friends of the Library will have a sale cart full of geeky-themed books, graphic novels, DVDs and more. And, let’s include an awesome display of our patrons’ Pop!/Funko! Figures under glass for public viewing.
Flea-Market: 11:00am-1:45pm. Local Artists and Collectors will have stalls selling their geeky-wears and personal collectibles.
Harry Potter Diagon Alley Experience: 2:00-4:00pm. (All Ages) Get your Hogwarts letter, then withdraw some gold coinage from Gringotts Wizarding Bank to spend on wands at Ollivander’s Wand Shop, snitches from Quality Quidditch Supply, and craft items at Madam Malkin’s. Oh, and don’t forget to check out books, audio books, and DVDs from Flourish & Blotts, then get your photo taken at the Platform 9 ¾ Wall! But be careful, you might end up on the Ministry of Magic’s “Undesirable List” for associating with that pesky boy with the lightning scar!
Fandomanji Human-Sized Boardgame: 2:00pm-4:00pm. (Tweens & Up, and younger players with a big person for company.) For teams of 1-4 players, match your skill against the Gamemaster’s in this room-sized, multi-fandom-themed strategy game. “Dare not begin unless you intend to end. You all must reach the sun to call out ‘Fandomanji!,’ or else of winners, there will be none!”
Live Music: 1:00-2:00pm. Chazz Gist will be playing sci-fi and fantasy themed music live.
Cosplay Makeup Tutorial on Making Yourself Into Living Manga: 2:30-3:00. Our very own local who’s been a panelist and vendor at a real Comi-Con, Sami Rees will give a live tutorial on cosplay makeup, and take questions and answers.
Table Games (All Day, 10:00-5:30). (Tweens & Up.) Bring your own, or use one of the games provided courtesy of Gateway Games.
Table Games Update: 1:00pm-2:00pm. (Tweens & Up.) Carena Wood from Gateway Games will lead a discussion and presentation on cool trends in the Table Game World.
Minecraft Blocks: Noon-4:00pm. (Children) Minecraft building blocks will be out in the Children’s area for building and play.
While you’re here, be sure to stop by the front desk and get a complimentary attendee badge and put in entries for some of our cool door prizes. If you’re willing to be one of the volunteers helping to make this bash a success , give us a call anytime this week. Or, questions? Call 225-3331 and ask for Michelle.
